Tesla Teams Up With GE Healthcare For Advanced MRI Scanner

A new advanced MRI machine is in the works now that GE Healthcare has formed a partnership with the European company Tesla Manufacturing Ltd. The 7.0 Tesla ultra high-field whole-body MRI scanners are used for medical research, specifically studying the brain and its functions, as well as other parts of the body.

Tesla Engineering’s new factory, which is under construction in Storrington, United Kingdom, will build the 7.0T magnets. GE is set to receive the first unit in 2015. GE Healthcare’s headquarters is located in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

The hope is that the machines will prove to give more accurate diagnoses and earlier detection of diseases. Improved effectiveness in investigational therapies in cases of certain diseases such as cancer, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, attention deficit disorder, head injuries, schizophrenia, epilepsy, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease is also a hope for the machine.

Richard Hausmann, the president and chief executive officer of GE Healthcare says that, “This agreement will enable GE to deepen and broaden our collaborations with leading MRI academics and visionaries, sharing our collective expertise and missions in technology, science and medicine. The GE 7.0T community in the U.S., Europe and Asia has already demonstrated breakthrough observations and understanding of Alzheimer’s disease, traumatic brain injury and cognitive physiology. Together, we will continue to push the frontiers of MRI for neuroscience and other applications.”
