Man Dead After Crash Involving Recycling Truck
A Waunakee man was killed Wednesday in Columbia County according to a statement released from the Wisconsin State Patrol.

According to a story posted by WKOW, Wednesday morning, about 8:20, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was called to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 60 at County Highway C in the Town of Hampden.
“A Columbia County recycling truck did not stop for a stop sign and struck a pickup truck, trapping that driver inside,” the article reads.
Rescue personnel were called in to extricate the man, who was identified on Thursday as 47-year-old Kenneth M. Helt. Rio EMS and Med Flight doctors provided emergency care, however, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Helt reportedly was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident and the driver of the recycling truck was not injured as a result of the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol. Highway 60 was shut down for nearly three hours.
Lodi Enterprise reports the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting a two vehicle accident with one of the vehicles rolling over after impact.
“The initial report was that one of the vehicles did not stop for the stop sign and struck the other vehicle. The vehicles involved were a Columbia County Recycling truck and a Chevrolet K2500 truck. The driver of the Chevrolet K2500 truck,” the Lodi Enterprise story reads. “The initial investigation indicates that the Columbia County Recycling truck did not stop for the stop sign. The crash remains under investigation by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol. The Wisconsin State Patrol Accident Reconstruction Team processed the scene.”
The Columbia Highway Department assisted with the traffic detour.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Arlington and Rio Fire, Rio EMS, Wisconsin State Patrol, Rio Police Department, Med Flight, Columbia County Medical Examiner’s Office and Blystone’s Towing.
