New Public Service Announcement highlights TBI

The Brain Injury Association of America along with Helius Medical Technologies has released a new Public Service Announcement called “Tackling TBI.” The announcement features patient and veteran advocate Montel Williams and former NFL player Marvin Washington.

The PSA was created with the intent of bringing awareness to health issues and to provide patients with education, resources and encouragement to participate in clinical trials to support the development of new therapies for traumatic brain injury.

“Currently more than 5.3 million Americans in the U.S. live with a lifelong disability as a result of a TBI and there are 1.7 million new cases each year,” Montel Williams says in the announcement. “Our goal is to ensure that the public at large understands the problem and that patients and caregivers understand where to go for resources that can help.”

The PSA featuring Williams and Washington reminds viewers that a TBI can range from subtle to severe, symptoms can take years to progress and that it’s important to speak with a doctor or healthcare professional if they think they’ve had a brain injury, according to a press release posted on Yahoo Finance .

We need to continue to provide help, hope and healing for the millions of Americans who sustain this life-altering, sometimes devastating, injury.”

A TBI is an injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain and can be caused by a host of things such as sports, car accidents, military service, trips, slips or falls. For many people, TBI causes fatigue, headaches, and difficulty with balance or motor skills, slurred speech, or seizures.
